vs Elicit
Science AI Journal vs Elicit
Both are AI tools researchers use day-to-day. Elicit reads the PDFs you bring it. We work from the papers we already hold — a free topic search, a 21-field comparison table you can unlock, and calibrated peer review on the draft that comes out of it. Here is the honest breakdown.
What Elicit is best at
Elicit is, by a comfortable margin, one of the strongest AI literature-review tools on the market. It excels at four jobs: (a) finding papers that match a natural-language research question, (b) extracting structured data — populations, interventions, outcomes — across a stack of papers, (c) summarising what a paper says in your own words, and (d) brainstorming research questions adjacent to a topic.
One thing it does that we do not: it works on the PDFs you bring it. Upload your own stack and Elicit will read those papers. Our comparison table is built only from papers we already hold a structured extraction for, so a very new or very narrow topic can fall below the floor and be refused — free of charge, before anything is billed.
What Science AI Journal is different at
Three differences worth flagging. These are why we built our tools rather than using Elicit:
- Calibrated peer review: AI Review runs 8 specialist agents (methodology, formulas & equations, originality, literature coverage, reproducibility, clarity & language, figures & tables and prior publication) against your full PDF and returns an editorial decision in under 15 minutes. Its 7 language-model agents are calibrated by retrieval on 69,000 real human peer reviews from 19+ academic platforms; the prior-publication agent is a deterministic lookup. Elicit doesn't currently offer a calibrated peer-review pipeline — its strength is the read-and-synthesise workflow upstream of submission.
- Pre-Check before you finish writing: paste a title + abstract (keywords optional) and get acceptance odds for top, mid and open/emerging journals, the detected field and the topics your abstract matched, in seconds. A run costs 15 credits, and a free account starts with 25 welcome credits. Use it to decide whether to keep polishing or send out. This is a different shape from Elicit's research-question brainstorm.
- Pre-indexed gap library: 120,000+ open research gaps mined up-front from 100,000+ papers, each anchored to specific cited evidence; 1,100+ of them have a permanent, citable /research-gaps/[slug] analysis page. We serve a curated, evidence-anchored gap library that is also citable.
- A cross-paper comparison table of our own: the gap finder returns the papers we hold on your topic in a grid with 21 named columns — objectives, problem statement, methods, dependent and independent variables, dataset, population sample, results, findings, limitations, each paper's own stated research gap, its future-research note and the rest. The search is free; unlocking a topic costs 50 credits and fills that grid across our whole collection — a column no delivered paper fills is left out rather than shown empty — grades each row full-text or abstract-only on screen and in every file, writes the research gaps from those rows, drafts the research proposal on them and includes one Pro Report run. CSV, XLSX and PDF match the screen; RIS and BibTeX carry the same papers to Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote.
When Elicit is the better fit
We will actively point you at Elicit when these are your needs:
- Reading and extracting from PDFs you upload yourself — we compare only papers we already hold an extraction for.
- Brainstorming research questions for a topic you're new to.
- Summarising a stack of PDFs into your own notes.
- Finding the seminal papers in a field you're entering.
When Science AI Journal is the better fit
We're the right pick when:
- You have a manuscript and want a calibrated peer review with a structured editorial decision.
- You want acceptance odds for top, mid and open/emerging journals from a title + abstract before investing in a full draft.
- You're deciding between target venues and want an outside-the-box readiness check.
- You want pre-vetted research gaps anchored to specific evidence (not LLM-generated suggestions).
Used together
One workflow that works: (1) Scope the topic with our Gaps & Literature Search — the search is free, and unlocking the topic gives you the filled comparison table and the gaps written from its rows. (2) Bring your own PDFs to Elicit for anything outside the papers we hold. (3) Develop your manuscript. (4) Use our Pre-Check to gauge readiness from your title + abstract before finalising the draft. (5) Use AI Review on the full PDF for an editorial decision before you send to a closed journal.
The overlap is real at step 1 and small everywhere else.
