Also, as the findings presented here are based on relatively lower-achieving students for a short period, the optimal duration and developmental period of intervention for students with different levels of linguistic proficiency remain to be researched. Given that adolescent newcomers’ literacy has been understudied (Cumming, 2023), and that limited academic support programs are available outside schools (Shizha & Makwarimba, 2024), much more work needs to be done to better understand the nature of language and literacy trajectories among adolescent NLs and to meet their needs.
