  • The bibliometric maps and thematic structure analyses presented in this study highlight current trends, structural gaps, and developmental opportunities in argumentation research in science education, suggesting several directions for future research: • Deepening niche areas and theoretical integration should be prioritized. Thematic maps indicate that areas such as formative assessment, cross-linguistic transfer, teacher professional development, and curriculum integration remain niche or emerging. Future research should place greater emphasis on experimental and design-based studies that explicitly connect these themes to the core theoretical foundations of the field and to classroom practice. Systematically linking these areas to the mainstream research agenda may enhance not only thematic diversity but also theoretical coherence and pedagogical impact. Strengthening their connection with cross-temporal constants such as learning and assessment would further anchor these developments within the field’s core structure. • Conceptual and methodological expansion should be encouraged. Argumentation studies remain concentrated around specific theoretical frameworks. Future research may benefit from refunctionalizing classical models such as Toulmin’s within contemporary digital learning environments and AI-supported meaning-making processes. Methodologically, integrating bibliometric mapping with longitudinal case studies and discourse analysis aimed at explaining how and why these trends emerge could provide a more explanatory account of the field’s developmental dynamics. • Global and comparative perspectives should be made more visible in the research agenda. Bibliometric production networks reveal a marked rise, particularly in countries such as China and Turkey, indicating that argumentation research is increasingly multi-centered. Comparative studies across educational systems and cultural contexts therefore represent a promising direction for future investigation. • Greater emphasis should be placed on impact-oriented research. While the literature demonstrates strong connections between argumentation-based pedagogies and classroom practices, their long-term effects on student outcomes remain underexplored. Future studies should examine sustained impacts on domains such as scientific literacy, critical thinking, and citizenship education, positioning argumentation not only as a pedagogical strategy but also as an epistemic foundation. • Methodological transparency and standardization should be strengthened. Future bibliometric research would benefit from more explicit reporting of data-cleaning procedures, keyword standardization 154 Ergunt & Yilmaz processes, and threshold selection criteria. Such transparency would contribute to greater comparability across studies and support the cumulative advancement of the field.

A second thematic stream is rooted in enduring institutional and behavioral challenges in academia. Kreitzer and Sweet-Cushman (2022) deliver a seminal synthesis of equity, gender bias, and fairness in student evaluations of teaching (SETs), advancing debates on academic justice and evaluative accountability (Boring et al., 2016; Rivera & Tilcsik, 2019). Similarly, Newton and Essex (2024) and Amzalag et al. (2022) examine academic dishonesty during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating how emergency digitalization expanded opportunities for contract cheating and unauthorized collaboration, while simultaneously reshaping perceptions of trust and surveillance in academic relations. A third group of highly cited studies, including Drolet et al. (2022) and Williamson et al. (2020), addresses research integrity, scholarly pressure, and researcher well-being, signaling JAET’s enduring engagement with the moral ecology of academic life (Tauginienė et al., 2019), a domain where ethics intersects with mental health, organizational climate, and epistemic responsibility (Anderson et al., 2007). Additionally, Hendy et al. (2021) extend the ethical dialogue cross-culturally, demonstrating that academic dishonesty behaviors and attitudes are mediated by social learning, cultural norms, and institutional frameworks (Teixeira & Rocha, 2010). Taken together, the most cited works delineate two converging trajectories in JAET’s intellectual influence: (1) A longstanding emphasis on fairness, bias, and integrity in academic practice; and (2) A rapidly intensifying engagement with the ethical challenges of digitalization and AI in scholarly and pedagogical contexts. This dual focus reflects a broader paradigmatic shift in the field of academic ethics, increasingly shaped by technological disruption, globalization, and interdisciplinarity.

  • Based on the findings of this bibliometric analysis, several directions are recommended to strengthen IBL in STEM education. Researchers are encouraged to move beyond simplistic debates on guided versus unguided inquiry by exploring context-sensitive and hybrid models that integrate scaffolding, metacognitive support, and student agency. As digital technologies increasingly mediate IBL, future studies should deepen investigations into the pedagogical and equity implications of tools, such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and data-rich learning environments. Localizing inquiry approaches by aligning them with learners’ cultural contexts and community priorities is also vital, ensuring relevance and inclusivity. Moreover, sustained teacher professional development must be prioritized to build pedagogical capacity, reflective practice, and assessment literacy in IBL. Finally, equity should remain central to IBL’s expansion, ensuring that students from marginalized, low- resource, and linguistically diverse backgrounds can access and benefit from inquiry-rich STEM experiences.   • Future research on resistance training (RT) in elite athletes should address several critical gaps. Geographic disparities especially limited contributions from Asia, Africa, and parts of South America necessitate broader international collaboration and targeted funding (Fon, 2023; Steele et al., 2023). Open-access publishing and data-sharing platforms can further support inclusivity and enhance global research visibility (Murphy et al., 2023). Specific athlete groups remain underexamined, including female, youth, and Paralympic athletes, each requiring population-appropriate training models (Franchi, Longo, et al., 2018; Faigenbaum & McFarland, 2023; Rodr et al., 2022). Increasing representation of these groups will improve the ecological validity of RT recommendations. Most RT studies still focus on short-term interventions, underscoring the need for longitudinal designs that capture in-season adaptation, chronic fatigue, and interactions with sport-specific demands (Townsend, 2022). Finally, emerging technologies including wearables, artificial intelligence, and machine learning offer promising avenues for advancing monitoring precision and individualized programming (José et al., 2022; Mateus et al., 2024). Molecular and imaging methods also provide opportunities to investigate adaptation mechanisms at deeper biological levels (Bersiner & Kirill, 2023). technology-assisted monitoring. In conclusion, RT is a fundamental pillar of elite athlete development, but future progress requires greater inclusion of diverse populations, enhanced international collaboration, and deeper integration of technology to strengthen both the scientific evidence base and practical application in optimizing elite sports performance.

  • Unlike previous bibliometric analyses restricted to specialty journals, our affiliation-based approach captures a broader spectrum of multidisciplinary literature, uniquely revealing emerging cross-disciplinary hotspots such as machine learning and targeted immunotherapy[7-9]. Despite providing comprehensive insights into global publication trends, this bibliometric study has several limitations. First, an affiliation-based search strategy was employed to maintain a focused scope and avoid irrelevant literature. However, this approach may under-capture relevant multi-disciplinary studies where authors are not affiliated with plastic surgery departments. This limitation is particularly pronounced in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and regenerative medicine, which are driven by data scientists and basic biologists prior to clinical integration. Second, relying exclusively on PubMed to manage our massive sample size inherently introduces database and language biases. This approach may omit non-English literature and articles exclusive to databases like Web of Science or Scopus, while also restricting the evaluation of citation linkages, such as self-citation rates. Third, our analysis emphasizes absolute publication volume without normalizing for national population, funding, or researcher count; thus, our findings are fundamentally descriptive and cannot establish strict causal inferences regarding research quality. Finally, while JCR Q1 status was employed as a bibliometric proxy, it is important to note that journal-level rankings do not inherently equate to the scientific quality or impact of individual papers. Because manual verification of each article was unfeasible, future studies might leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning for bulk semantic comprehension to mitigate these constraints and capture deeper scientific nuances.

  • Despite Scopus's broad coverage, our analysis is con- strained by the inherent limitations of bibliometric in- dicators, such as citation lags and coverage bias. As Fig. 2 shows that interest in research on Persea americana active compounds, technologies, and applications has increased exponentially from 2005 to 2024, with a coefficient of determination of 0.952, peaking in 2023. Furthermore, the annual growth rate in the observed period is 15.24%. These trends are consistent with the outlook for the global avocado trade. According to the FAO, the global avocado trade accounts for more than 60% of tropical fruit sales, underscoring its importance and appeal across industries and communities (FAO, 2023). In addition, global concerns about the environmental impacts of industrial activities have encouraged the exponential growth of scientific production. The possible driving factors include increasing demand for energy efficiency, reducing polluting emissions, and minimizing waste (Basanta et al., 2007). Likewise, the evolution of international regulations, e.g., ISO 14000 standards and governmental policies, has spurred industries to adopt circular economy practices, providing a tailwind for the observed exponential growth (García-Silvera et al., 2023; Karaeva et al., 2023; Loayza and Silva, 2013). Additionally, we found that greater access to advanced analytical tools and open access to large volumes of data have facilitated scientific collaborations in this field (Monroy and Diaz, 2018). The average total citations per year during the study period is 3.34, while the average citation per document is 24.15. A recent study found that these publications exhibit superior citation characteristics relative to other research areas (Kokorevics, 2022). This provides context for the work's average citation data, reflecting the relevance and impact of research in this sector. 3 Environmental Research, Engineering and Management 2026/82/1 68 noted by Gaur and Kumar (2018), the transition from quantitative metrics to qualitative statements intro- duces subjectivity. University libraries should establish systematic archiving policies to ensure comprehensive holdings of all journals published within parent institutions. 2. The National Library of Nigeria needs to coordinate a Nigerian journal index or register to improve discoverability, selection, and acquisition of the journals. 3. Universities in Nigeria should encourage the migration of print-only titles to online platforms and integrate them into institutional repositories to enhance global accessibility. 4. Universities in Nigeria should consider diversifying their publishing strategies by encouraging the creation of niche and interdisciplinary journals that address emerging issues and global research trends, rather than replicating traditional disciplinary structures. 5. Universities in Nigeria should provide special funding and editorial support toward STEM, health sciences, and agriculture journals to balance disciplinary representation. Future studies should track the activity status of journals and investigate the factors that enable long-term survival, especially in resource-constrained context.

  • We do not expect the scholarly literature ever to be free of errors. We are concerned here only with failures to replicate studies that continue to be cited affirmatively. Nor do we expect the research community to move with alacrity to expand efforts at replication. Although we value a scientific literature purged of confirmed errors, we acknowledge the ideal is unlikely to be achieved for most older findings. We anticipate more recent articles and those coming in the future will be subject to more scrutiny. We anticipate that fields advancing quickly will present corrections in the course of literature reviews, following collection of new data and reanalyses prove older results erroneous rather than efforts at correction or retraction of published work. Nevertheless, in our disciplines, and we predict in many others, findings that are difficult to repeat, because of lack of funds or inac- cessible methods to replicate them, may persist in the literature for long periods along with their harms. In the latter situations, we still urge efforts to replicate but we acknowledge that we have no solution for findings that are contingent on unique events (historicity) or on unique events or subjects. Indeed, we have little to offer to improve purely qualitative research that reports on individual uniqueness. Finally, a major limitation of our approach is that our recommendations impose an added burden on editors and peer reviewers to scrutinize stud- ies that garner affirmative citations outside the scholarly literature. This seems a nearly impossible task on their own. But aided by the qualified researchers specialized in the subfield of an article getting affirmative citations in public discourse and aided by post-publication review- ers and efforts at replication of major findings, it seems a more tractable challenge.
