The gap
Abstract The pattern and cause of upper‐water temperature (UWT) variations on millennial timescales in the Southern Ocean (SO) and the mechanism of their interaction with high‐latitude Northern Hemisphere climate remain unclear.

However, these findings are inconsistent with the strengthening of the 41‐kyr cyclicity in marine δ18O records after the iNHG, whereas they are consistent with northern high‐latitude sea surface temperature records that bear the imprint of local climate signals when the Arctic ice sheets were of limited extent during the Early Pleistocene.

Our results underscore the need for additional isotope-enabled climate model simulations and additional δ 18 O records, especially from understudied regions across North America, for a comprehensive view of seasonal-scale hydroclimate variations and synoptic-scale atmospheric circulation pattern changes over the Holocene.
