Research gap analysis derived from 6 agriculture papers in our local library.
The gap
Agroecological approaches have the potential to reduce the adverse impacts of agriculture on the environment whilst sustaining productivity, yet rigorous assessments of associated policies’ ability to achieve these dual aims at farm scale…

- The multidimensional performance of agroecology: what we know and what we are yet to learn (2026) · Frontiers in Agronomy · doi
The paper identifies a gap in understanding the economic benefits of agroecology. There is a lack of evidence on the impact of agroecology on large-scale financial and institutional support. The paper highlights the need for more research on the context-specific suitability and performance of agroecological practices.

generalfuture-work sectionKeywords: concerted efforts scientific community support evidence-based agroecological transitions - Agroecology in West Africa: the pathway towards a sustainable transition of agri-food systems? A review (2026) · Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems · doi
The available evidence on the potential of agroecology for food systems transformation remains insufficient. There is a need for more context-specific and multidimensional science on agroecology. The paper identifies a gap in the documentation of the nature and magnitude of agroecology's contributions to addressing environmental and food-systems challenges.

Food security assessments in this set focus on global and regional scales or single-country case studies, but none systematically compare agritech adoption and food security outcomes across multiple developing regions with different agroecological conditions, infrastructure capacity, or market access.

Acknowledgments While this study provides a comprehensive economic assessment of agroecological transition, the social health, and environmental aspects were explored qualitatively and not quantified. Future studies could focus on quantifying the environmental, social, and health impacts of agroecological interventions as well as expanding such analyses to other value chains. This will strengthen generalizability and provide more targeted guidance for policy, investment, and sus- tainable food systems development.

While the emerging evidence on the contribution of agroecology to food security, nutrition, economic development and environmental sustainability is compelling, there is scarce and sometimes negative evidence on agroecology's role in increasing farmers' and indigenous communities' agency as well as empowering women and youth.

The gap in the current literature is the lack of comprehensive analyses of agro-sustainable models that consider environmental, socio-economic, and governance dimensions simultaneously. The study aims to fill this gap by prioritizing analyses of comprehensive agro-sustainable models.
