The study of language processing during reading is challenging due to the complexity of the reading process. There is a need for a better understanding of how visual information is acquired and used during reading. The paper identifies the perceptual span problem, the data summary problem, and the eye-mind lag problem as significant challenges in using eye movement data.

Thus, the main limitation of this study relates to the experimental design itself. Previous studies have shown that eye movement activity and reading strategies adapt under the influence of certain task types (Kaakinen and Hyönä 2010; Strukelj and Niehorster 2018), but research in this area is limited, and the influence of tasks on comprehension and strategies is not fully understood. Beyond reading itself, eye movement patterns are influenced by other factors that we did not control for.

Further research is needed to develop a more comprehensive understanding of language processing during reading. Studies should investigate the role of prior linguistic context in reducing the visual duration threshold for words. Research should explore the potential of eye movement recording for studying language processing in different populations, such as children and individuals with reading disabilities.
