Many studies have investigated how soil water
Research gap analysis derived from 3 agriculture papers in our local library.
The gap
Many studies have investigated how soil water availability in shallow soil affects forest transpiration, but how deep soil water status (below 1 m depth) alters tree water use remains poorly understood.
Evidence profile
Sourced from the abstract and future work and stated research gap of the source papers, classified as general, drawn from work published between 2024 and 2026, spanning 2 journals. Those papers have been cited 16 times in total.

For the same species of tree across different ages, the interactions between root structural traits, nitrogen uptake rate, and soil environment have not been fully characterized, a situation that constrains our understanding of underground resource strategies employed by trees at different ages.

Tree age and developmental stage may also partially influence transpiration characteristics, hydraulic architecture, and stomatal regulation strategies. Previous studies have shown that younger trees often exhibit higher transpiration rates and water use. This is due to higher leaf area index (LAI) and greater stomatal conductance (Delzon et al., 2004; Delzon and Loustau, 2005; Buckley et al., 2012). In addition, transpiration and stomatal conductance generally decline with increasing tree age (Oishi et al., 2020). Older trees tend to rely more on deep soil water, so they may experience greater water stress during drought (Huo et al., 2018). Therefore, ontogenetic effects cannot be completely excluded in urban-rural comparisons.

The effects of urbanization on tree transpiration and its regulatory mechanisms are poorly understood. There is a need to quantify transpiration responses to environmental drivers in urban and rural environments.
