The findings of this SR point to the need for a comprehensive rethinking of how English–Arabic and Arabic–English translation is taught, practiced, and assessed. The recurring error patterns across metaphorical, lexical, syntactic, and technical domains suggest that translation competence must be developed through targeted, systematic, and evidence-based instructional approaches. Therefore, this study recommends the following: • Translation programs should prioritize the development of deep lexical knowledge in both languages. Instruction must move beyond surface-level vocabulary lists toward: semantic networks and word families, domain-specific terminology (legal, medical, scientific, cultural), polysemy training, including one-to-many and many-to-one mappings, contextualized vocabulary learning rather than isolated word memorization. Students should be trained to identify semantic shades of meaning and select equivalents appropriate to domain, register, and context. • Given the high difficulty of idioms, metaphors, kinship expressions, color symbolism, numeral-based expressions, and culturally embedded phrases, translation pedagogy should include: explicit teaching of metaphorical mapping across languages, contrastive analysis of figurative systems in Arabic and English, exposure to authentic idiomatic expressions in diverse genres, and practice in identifying fixed expressions and avoiding literal translation. Students should learn to treat idioms and metaphors as holistic units rather than compositional structures. • The dominance of literal translation and avoidance indicates weak inferencing abilities.

To improve pronunciation accuracy, auditory discrimination, and decoding skills among Arabic–English learners, and enhance the reliability of instructional input, the current study recommends that instruction should combine phonological training with decoding practice and systematic vocabulary development, especially for Proper Nouns, technical terminology, and domain-specific expressions frequently encountered in media, healthcare, and academic contexts. Learners benefit from targeted instruction on features strongly influenced by Arabic phonotactics, including consonant clusters, stress placement, vowel quality, and the avoidance of over-gemination. Raising students’ awareness of cross-linguistic contrasts can help prevent fossilization of L1-based patterns. Since many pronunciation and meaning-transfer errors stem from unfamiliarity with global institutions, geographical names, acronyms, and political designations, curricula should incorporate structured exposure to high-frequency international terminology and real-world media content. Educators and learners should critically evaluate synthetic audio before using it as a pronunciation model. When possible, AI input should be supplemented with human-produced recordings, especially for diacritic-sensitive Arabic words and context-dependent English forms. Furthermore, learners need systematic practice in distinguishing unfamiliar phonemes, decoding long or complex words, and recognizing Proper Nouns in fast speech. Activities such as minimal-pair training, slowed-speech exposure, and repeated listening to authentic media can strengthen these skills. Instruction should include timed listening, shadowing, and short interpreting segments that simulate real-world processing demands. These tasks help learners develop rapid form–meaning mapping and reduce reliance on compensatory strategies. Specialized fields such as healthcare, diplomacy, and media require tailored pronunciation lists, annotated corpora, and practice materials that reflect the terminology learners encounter in professional settings. Learners should be trained to recognize when they are relying on approximation strategies, such as nonsense forms, rhyming analogies, or literal translation, and to replace these with more accurate decoding and inference strategies. 6. conclusion This SR brings together two decades of research that collectively illuminate the complex, multi-layered nature of pronunciation performance in Arabic–English contexts.

Translation training must explicitly address polysemy, collocations, plurals, and culturally embedded expressions, with emphasis on contextual interpretation rather than literal transfer. AI can be integrated into vocabulary and terminology instruction by providing personalized practice, generating contextualized examples, and offering instant explanations and feedback. AI tools can create adaptive quizzes, visual representations of technical terms, and discipline-specific scenarios that strengthen lexical associations and deepen understanding. They also support learners by transcribing lectures, extracting key terminology, and enabling students to compare human and machine translations to develop critical awareness of technical equivalents. When used strategically, AI enhances exposure, reinforces retention, and helps instructors diagnose weaknesses and plan targeted remedial work. 5.1 Directions for Future Research Future research should expand beyond college-level EFL learners to include younger learners, multilingual contexts, and diverse educational settings to examine how lexical development unfolds across proficiency levels. More empirical studies are needed on the long-term impact of multimodal tools, mind-mapping, mobile apps, and online platforms on vocabulary depth, retention, and transfer to reading, writing, pronunciation, and translation. Research should also investigate how learners develop sensitivity to polysemes, collocations, morphological patterns, and phoneme–grapheme correspondences, and how instructional interventions can strengthen these skills. Given the growing role of AI in translation and language learning, future studies should examine how AI tools handle domain-specific vocabulary, idiomaticity, and cross-linguistic contrasts, and how learners can be trained to critically evaluate AI-generated output. Finally, meta-analytic work is needed to quantify effect sizes across instructional approaches and technological tools to provide stronger evidence for pedagogical decision-making.
