Future research should address these limitations by employing longitudinal designs, using diverse methods of data collec- tion, and considering a broader range of influencing factors. Third, the sample was drawn from a specific geographic area in Türkiye, and although the participants were earthquake survivors, the findings may not be generalizable to other Psychiatric Quarterly (2025) 96:169–1821 3178 populations affected by different types of traumas or to individuals in different cultural con- texts.

Second, trauma exposure was not measured and could not be included as a covariate, which is an important limitation given its central role in this population. It draws on a large, school-based, cluster-sampled sample; it assesses general and trauma-specific outcomes jointly rather than in isolation; and it is set in Türkiye, the country hosting the largest Syrian refugee population, where evidence on resilience remains scarce relative to high-income resettlement settings [2,26].

There is a lack of knowledge about longer-term trauma- and loss-related psychopathology. The study aims to fill this gap by examining the association between additional earthquake-related adversity and posttraumatic stress and grief severity.
