CONCLUSION In this paper, the XGBoost-SHAP-based attribution model is developed to expose the nonlinear process of tourism mar- keting on tourists’ psychology and behavior. This powerful, explanatory model is highly transferable, offering a crucial analytical tool for the industry to accurately map the com- VOL. 15, NO. 3, AUGUST 2026 1375 plex, nonlinear impacts of its branding efforts on consumer identity, emotion, and subsequent purchasing decisions. Ef- fectiveness of tourism marketing activities is not universal, and the effectiveness is embedded in a multidimensional environment of the tourist’s identity characteristics, the life cycle stage, and the tourism destination type. Social identity is more influential among the younger cohorts whereas older tourists are more influenced by escapist routes. First- time out-of-province visitors are more influenced by digital products, and repeat visitors are more influenced by physical festival experiences. Historic and cultural venues depend on authoritative narratives, urban leisure spaces rely on new encounters for conversion. Psychological motivation serves as a critical mediator and its manifestation dynam- ically changes across different ages and contexts. This framework surpasses linear assumptions and enables micro- foundations via the analysis from variable association to the contextualized causal chain, offering actionable attribution evidence and decision support for tailored tourism marketing strategies. Critically, this capability provides a powerful, transferable model that allows the industry to move beyond surface trends, using the causal chain analysis to inform precise product development and highly individualized mar- keting strategies in the global consumer market.
