  • Sustainable food packaging from meat and seafood waste: bioactive compounds, extraction, and innovation (2026) · Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems · doi

The valorization of meat and seafood waste for sustainable food packaging presents significant opportunities within a circular bio- economy framework; however, several challenges remain. Scaling up green extraction technologies such as enzyme-assisted, ultra- sound-assisted, and deep eutectic solvent methods is essential to achieve industrial feasibility and cost-effectiveness. The develop- ment of multifunctional packaging systems integrating antimicro- bial, antioxidant, and intelligent sensing properties is another key area for enhancing food safety and shelf life. Improving the stability and controlled release of bioactive compounds through advanced encapsulation techniques is also critical. In addition, comprehen- sive life cycle assessments and techno-economic evaluations are required to ensure environmental and economic sustainability. Successful commercialization will depend on standardization of processes, regulatory compliance, and integration with existing packaging systems. Finally, enhancing consumer acceptance and fostering collaboration between academia and industry will be cru- cial for translating research into practical, scalable, and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
