  theory of memory development, Although Craik’s attentional deficit theory of memory decline provides a potentially powerful the direct evi- dence supporting the theory is at present rather limited. There are three research strategies which are relevant to a full testing of the theory. The first such strategy is to attempt to measure the attentional requirements of the cognitive operations involved in tasks which produce age differ- ences in recall performance. At present, this approach has been applied solely to the question of developmental differences in the attentional re- quirements of cumulative rehearsal. No comparable research has exam- ined strategies other than rehearsal with children, or strategy use of any kind by older adults. There is a similar lack of research concerned with the attentional requirements of semantic processing by children and older adults on levels of processing tasks. A second approach relevant to testing an attentional deficit theory is to examine the effects of reducing the attentional requirements of strategy use on strategy use by children and older adults. The research by Orn- stein, in which the attentional requirement of cumulative rehearsal was varied by manipulating item visibility, is a first step in this direction. A third possible approach is to examine the effects of increasing the attentional requirements of task performance (either by using a subsidiary task to reduce the amount of attention subjects can allocate to the recall the task directly) on the recall performance of task or by manipulating young adults. According to an attentional deficit theory, young adults tested under such conditions should perform in a manner similar to that of children or older adults tested under normal conditions. At present, this approach has been used to study age differences in memory span (Case et al., 1982; Chi, 1976) and semantic processing on recall tasks (Rabinowitz et al., 1982), but no comparable research exists concerned with the use of mnemonic strategies on recall tasks. Thus, although the available evidence from studies using these three research strategies is generally consistent with the predictions of an attentional deficit theory of memory development and decline, further research is needed con- MEMORY AND AGING 77 cemed with age differences in the attentional requirements of the cog- nitive operations involved in recall tasks, as well as with the relationship between such attentional differences and age differences in recall perfor- mance .
