  Counselors and researchers can further the psychological well-being of retired persons by placing greater emphasis on the kinds of interests and needs that have emerged from their previous career activities. Counselors may assist preretired workers in reducing their uncertainties about retirement through preretirement planning programs. Such programs include: (a) developing coping mechanisms for negative dimensions; (b) prescribing specific retirement life-stlyes; (c) teaching how to estimate SEPTEMBER 1982 133 income at retirement (pensions, social security, etc.); and (d) counseling groups to deal with workers' concerns regarding their lives in retirement, social relationships, personal needs, and so forth. Researchers should consider replicating this study with a larger sample to determine if generalizations could be made about the life satisfaction of preretired and retired workers.
