In conclusion, green manuring is a crucial and sustainable way to improve soil health and productivity in Bangladesh’s rice-based agriculture. This review highlights various types of green manure crops, particularly leguminous species like Sesbania rostrata, Sesbania aculeata, Crotalaria juncea, Vigna unguiculata, and Vigna radiata, as well as non-leguminous options such as Sorghum bicolor, Setaria italica, Brassica juncea, Eich- hornia crassipes, and Azolla pinnata. These crops can be effectively used during the post-harvest fallow period to enhance soil fertility, organic matter content, and nutrient cycling. Mechanisms like biological nitrogen fixation, rapid biomass decomposition, and microbial interactions support the beneficial effects of green manuring. These lead to higher crop yields, improved soil structure, and better resilience against environmental stresses. Evidence from regional case studies shows the advantages of adopting green manure, including rice yield increases of up to 25%, reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers, and improved soil physical and chemical properties. Timing, techniques, and crop selection for incorporation practices are essential for maximizing benefits and ensuring sustainable land management. Innovations such as biofertilizers and micro- bial inoculants show promise for the future. However, challenges like limited awareness, seed availability, and short-term economic returns hinder wider adoption in Bangladesh. Addressing these issues needs coordinated efforts, including policy support, farmer edu- cation, research into locally adapted varieties, and incentive programs. Promoting green manuring during the fallow period offers a cost-effective way to restore soil fertility and Irin et al. Discover Agriculture (2026) 4:232 Page 21 of 26 helps improve climate resilience by improving moisture retention and carbon seques- tration. Ultimately, emphasizing green manuring as an important part of integrated soil fertility management can reduce reliance on imported chemical fertilizers, lessen envi- ronmental pollution, and boost the sustainability of Bangladesh’s rice agriculture. Future research should focus on developing location-specific practices, exploring innovative biofertilizer technologies, and creating policy frameworks that support organic soil improvement practices, ensuring long-term food security and ecological sustainability for the country.
