Limited prevalence data on farms and larger slaughter facilities, which constrains understanding of AIV transmission risk
Research gap analysis derived from 3 biology papers in our local library.
The gap
There is limited prevalence data on farms and larger slaughter facilities, which constrains understanding of AIV transmission risk. The focus on live bird markets has diverted attention from larger slaughter facilities, despite their key role in poultry distribution.

The study identifies challenges in detecting and characterizing AIVs in environmental samples, including the need for sensitive and specific diagnostic tests. The study also highlights the challenges of understanding the genetic relationships between human-derived and environmental AIVs, including the need for robust phylogenetic analyses. The paper notes the challenges of conducting longitudinal surveillance of AIVs in poultry-associated environments, including the need for sustained funding and resources.

Although the significance of virus isolates from surveillance samples remains unclear, Viruses 2025, 17, 926 15 of 21 they still contribute valuable information to the growing database for epidemiology re- search and lead to a future research direction involving the genomic comparison between isolates from lesions and non-lesions to identify potential pathogenicity markers. Currently, no genetic markers have been identified to differentiate pathogenic from non-pathogenic ARVs [4], and it is well known that the majority of ARVs are con- sidered non-pathogenic [3]; therefore, information on whether viruses isolated from these active surveillance samples are associated with clinical disease could not be determined. Avian reovirus has caused significant economic losses in the poultry industry, high- lighting the urgent need to clarify current transmission patterns through molecular epi- demiology across different hosts, particularly given the limited data currently available for turkey hosts.

There is limited prevalence data on farms and larger slaughter facilities, which constrains understanding of AIV transmission risk. The focus on live bird markets has diverted attention from larger slaughter facilities, despite their key role in poultry distribution. The study aims to address this gap by investigating the transmission of Avian Influenza A(H9N2) virus across chicken production and distribution networks in Vietnam.
