  • Unravelling the dynamics of successful collaboration and the potential for community-based learning in child and youth care (2025) · Social Work/Maatskaplike Werk · doi

It is recommended that other disciplinary departments, particularly social work, reconstruct their traditional fieldwork placements by moving more into underserved or marginalised community spaces where students can engage, collaborate and plan interventions that address contextually relevant problems. Only through embracing community engagement as an equal partner alongside teaching and research can the shift towards integrating engagement in teaching and research be achieved. It is therefore recommended that universities support community engagement initiatives more robustly, so that they become entrenched within teaching and research in higher education. Peace education should be applied to each age group and especially to students who are in their puberty age for peace education to reach its aims. Peace education should be introduced to trainings of teachers both as pre-service and as in-service training. For peace education to be able to achieve its optimum aim, there is the need for teachers to be at peace with themselves, with social sensitivity, to adopt solutions for solving problems peacefully. The Nigerian government should facilitate meaningful and effective medium for skills acquisition to address the issue of youth unemployment in the Country. It is essential that the government should embark upon sensitization and orientation of youths on conflict resolution, to inculcate in them, the values and attitudes towards developing a culture of peace. Through this, they will be encouraged on the need for dialogue, negotiation, respect for human rights and other traditional ways of resolving conflicts for the purpose of peace building. Various governments also need to amplify the opportunity of in-service training on peace education for governments to de-emphasize line officers, overzealousness and insensitivity on the part of government officers, against the citizens and the youths. NIU Journal of Social Sciences Governments at various levels should adhere to the tenets of transparency, accountability and should also avoid paying lip service to enabling and vital policies in governance. The Federal Ministry of education should endeavor to fast track a realistic process of including Peace education in curriculums, right from pre-school education, as a means of inculcating innate peaceful coexisting interrelationship in the psyche of Nigerian citizens. In many countries with low levels of development, such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Somali and Sudan, the peace education is included in curriculums since preschool education (Tumuklu; 2006). The Nigerian Government should also introduce peace education as a mandatory course in the trainings of all categories of officers of the Nigeria Police, the Army, the Navy, the Air force and all other Security Agencies or bodies, including Private Security Organizations, that are licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It is recommended that education on peace strategies be implemented for both children and adults in South Africa on a larger scale in the various provinces. For children, this will help them to grow up with a mindset and attitude that condemns and resists xenophobic violence. This can be achieved by hosting educational training sessions on television channels, and the Ministry of Education can incorporate these sessions into the Life Orientation modules offered in the South African curriculum. To further promote empathy and address violence, a community-based project with stakeholders from different fields, such as NGOs, religious organisations and political parties, can join forces and use interactive techniques like story circles, peace circles, art, and drama. Further, including parents and guardians in peace education workshops may further increase the impact of workshops outside of the classroom. CONCLUSION Shifting how people think about certain social issues is a critical aspect of social change. Toxic mindsets lead to blaming marginalized people and impede efforts to address violence. The importance of workshops for training children cannot be stressed enough. The study has emphasized the role of educating for peace through the use of training workshops as relevant tools for child participation and engagement. Education is an effective weapon to transform people’s mindset and can undoubtedly be used as a powerful instrument, and is essential for changing the conduct and attitudes of individuals and societies. The workshop sessions offered a safe space that would enable participants to connect. However, for workshops to be a success, there needs to be flexibility, language considerations, ground rules and use of creative tools. The results show that workshops are a powerful tool that can be used as an educational tool for peace.
