  • Teacher-student relationships and social support as drivers of learning and behaviour in Malaysian gifted students (2026) · BMC Psychology · doi

This study has several limitations that should be acknowl- edged. First, the cross-sectional design does not allow causal inferences to be drawn from the observed relation- ships. Second, the sample consisted of gifted students aged 10–17 years, spanning the early to late stages of adolescence. Although age grouping was applied, devel- opmental differences may still have influenced the find- ings. In addition, students were nested within classes and a single school context; however, class-level identi- fiers were not available, and potential clustering effects could not be modelled statistically. Some scales produced Cronbach’s alpha values below the conventional 0.70 threshold, suggesting reduced internal consistency for specific measures. This should be taken into consider- ation when interpreting the findings. Third, the reliance on self-report questionnaires may introduce social desirability bias, particularly for con- structs such as self-regulated learning (SRL) and behav- ioural outcomes. In a high-achieving gifted school context, students may over-report positive behaviours (e.g., self-regulation) and under-report behavioural dif- ficulties to present themselves in a favourable way. This tendency may have inflated the observed relationships between parental involvement and positive student out- comes. Therefore, these associations should be inter- preted with caution, as they may represent the upper range of the true effects. Future research should address this limitation by using multi-informant approaches, such as incorporating teacher or parent reports, to pro- vide a more balanced and reliable assessment of these constructs. Finally, the study was conducted in one Malaysian gifted education setting with a relatively small and aca- demically homogeneous sample; therefore, the find- ings should be generalised with caution. Future research should employ longitudinal and multi-level designs, use larger and more diverse samples, and incorporate addi- tional contextual and individual factors (e.g., teacher characteristics, school climate, and student attributes) to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the pro- cesses examined.

  • The early signs of giftedness: the development of a preschool screening checklist (2026) · Frontiers in Education · doi

With the abovementioned contribution to literature, the study has a few limitations. First, the data is based on recalled parental observations of the preschool years. This may have increased recall bias and social desirability. Second, although early giftedness traits were derived from the literature and parental observations, validity was examined solely via parental reports. The absence of multiple informants such as teachers or other professionals introduces the likelihood of common-method bias. Future research should employ longitudinal designs, multiple informants, naturalistic observations, and larger comprehensive psychometric validation.

  • An Examination of the Relationships Between Ego Development, Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration, and the Behavioral Characteristics of Gifted Adolescents (2011) · Gifted Child Quarterly · cited 35× · doi

Study results are interpreted as indicating that although ego development and Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration may share similarities, they are different constructs, and further investigation is needed to best use these theories in designing appropriate and effective counseling and teaching intervention strategies for working with gifted adolescents.
