Continued efforts toward standardized reference materials, harmonized reporting practices, inter- laboratory comparison studies, and transparent documentation of analytical workflows will strengthen comparability across studies while recognizing that multiple complementary analytical methods are likely to remain necessary for comprehensive characterization of microplastics and nanoplastics. Figure 1. Different analytical methods measure different endpoints in microplastics and nanoplastics analysis. Established laboratory approaches—including FTIR microscopy, Raman microscopy, Py-GC-MS, thermal desorption GC-MS, SEM-EDS, and fluorescence imaging—use different instrumentation and may report particle count, polymer mass, particle size, morphology, polymer identity, or relative abundance in non-interchangeable units. EcoExposure™ is designed instead around a defined field-measurement framework for total plastic burden, including microplastics and nanoplastics, expressed on a standardized particles-per-liter basis to support repeatable comparison across samples, locations, and time. Laboratory methods remain complementary where polymer-specific identification, morphology, chemical confirmation, or other method-specific analytical endpoints are required.
