Significant heterogeneity in operational definitions precluded a metaanalysis. Furthermore, the underrepresentation of non-Western contexts limits the generalizability of the findings. Future research should prioritize: (1) longitudinal neuroimaging studies to track neuroplastic changes in bilingual development; (2) more studies in under-represented, non-Western multilingual contexts; and (3) rigorous intervention trials to evaluate the efficacy of specific s upport strategies, such as parent-coaching models or different bilingual education programs.
