  • Longitudinal Relationship of Childhood Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Symptoms with Perceived Stress and Job Satisfaction in Adulthood (2026) · Child Psychiatry & Human Development · doi

A major strength of this study is its use of a nationally representative longitudinal dataset, which allows for greater generalizability than clinical or convenience samples and provides temporal ordering of variables across critical developmental stages. By integrating a developmental perspective with established occupational health models, our analysis bridges literatures that are often studied in isolation and offers a nuanced view of how childhood ADHD symptoms are associated with adult work outcomes. Nonetheless, several limitations should be noted. First, ADHD symptoms were assessed retrospectively, which may introduce recall bias and measurement error. Specifically, participants’ current psychological states, such as elevated stress or negative affect, may have influenced their recollection of childhood symptoms, potentially inflating the observed associations between ADHD-I symptoms and perceived stress. Moreover, retrospective self-reports may be subject to telescoping effects or selective recall, wherein more salient or distressing symptoms are disproportionately remembered. Although the BAARS-IV was designed for retrospective assessment of childhood ADHD symptoms and has demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties in prior research, these reports lack the precision of prospective clinical evaluations conducted during childhood. Future research employing prospective, multiinformant assessments of ADHD symptoms would help clarify the extent to which retrospective measurement may have biased the present findings. Second, the study relied on brief self-report indicators of job demand and job control, which, although grounded in well-established occupational models, cannot fully capture the multidimensional nature of work environments. Particularly notable is that job demand was operationalized solely as task repetitiveness, which represents only a narrow facet of the broader job demand construct. Job demand typically encompasses workload, time pressure, role conflict, and emotional demands, among other dimensions. This narrow operationalization may help explain why the job demand pathway showed weaker and less consistent associations with outcomes than the job control pathway. It also limits the generalizability of our findings regarding job demand to broader forms of workplace demands. This limitation introduces ambiguity in interpreting the mechanisms underlying our findings. For example, lower perceived autonomy or higher repetitiveness among individuals with elevated inattention may reflect subjective appraisal biases related to cognitive or self-regulatory limitations, objective features of the jobs they occupy, or both. Likewise, selection processes may be at play.
