Understanding of how farms reallocate production across
Research gap analysis derived from 3 agriculture papers in our local library.
The gap
There is a lack of understanding of how farms reallocate production across alternative grazing systems. The existing literature has paid less attention to the composition of livestock management regimes.

- Spatial variation in biomass production and nutritional quality of livestock feed resources along altitudinal gradient in Southern Ethiopia (2026) · Discover Applied Sciences · doi
Improving livestock feed systems requires context-specific and seasonally responsive interventions. Feed conservation practices, including hay making, silage preparation, and improved crop residue utilization, should be strengthened to address dry-season shortages. Agro-ecology-based strategies are essential, focusing on feed quality improvement in lowlands, biomass optimization in midlands, and efficient utilization in highlands. Expanding the integration of improved forage species into smallholder systems can enhance feed availability and quality. Sustainable management of communal grazing lands and wetlands should be promoted through community-based approaches. Strengthening extension services, supported by enabling policies and research–extension linkages, is critical to improve adoption of improved feeding practices.

Water scarcity, reduced grazing availability, and increased disease incidence are significant challenges faced by livestock farmers in Mazabuka District, Zambia. The study identifies the need for systemic support, particularly training in climate-smart livestock practices, subsidised feed and water interventions, and livestock insurance schemes.
