- Faith Matters: The Religious Lives of Christian Parents Raising Children with Disabilities in the USA (2026) · Journal of Religion and Health · doi
Additional research is needed on the religious lives of parents raising children with disabilities. Longitudinal studies could examine how religious faith evolves over time as families move through different stages of their child’s development, includ- ing major transitions such as initial diagnosis, school entry, adolescence, and school exit. Such research could explore whether faith tends to grow, plateau, or decline during periods of stress. Future studies should also more intentionally attend to the perspectives of fathers. Prior research points to some gender differences in religios- ity (e.g., Parker et al., 2011), yet the voices of fathers are underrepresented in this literature (e.g., Olson et al., 2002). Expanding the sample to better capture pater- nal perspectives would offer a fuller understanding of faith within these families. In addition, studies that include families from non-Christian traditions are needed (e.g., Othman et al., 2022). Such comparative work could identify distinctive resources, practices, and challenges within various faith traditions.

There is a need for a model that reconstructs the family's role in shaping the religious character of adolescents in the digital era. Existing research has highlighted the significance of parental involvement in the religious development of adolescents, but there is a gap in understanding how parents can effectively shape the religious character of their adolescents.
