  • Price‐Quality Correlations in the Japanese Market (1984) · Journal of Consumer Affairs · doi

A “super chaos of competition” appears to exist in the portion of the Japanese market which was studied here. This might be because Japanese consumers are not well-informed about the market and therefore tend to use rules of thumb which affect the functioning of the market. One rule of thumb was tested here and found to be un- reliable. Another rule of thumb which Japanese consumers are said to use often is to buy the products of large well-known manufac- turers. (Loyalty to such manufacturers is partially attributed to their high quality of post-purchase warranty service.) Therefore, future researchers might attempt to determine if the products of large well- known companies are higher in quality than those of other Japanese companies. Another avenue for future research might be the segmentation of the Japanese market into large, high-volume stores (i.e., department stores and self-service stores) and small local stores. Using quality scores from Monthly Consumers and prices collected in the stores, the efficiency of the two types of stores in the Japanese market could be compared.
