We see intersectional visibility and awareness as the foun- dation for queer gerontology’s commitment to challenging the pathologization and invisibilization of LGBTQ + lives in mainstream gerontological scholarship. An extension of that foundation includes developing and applying critical perspec- tives—those that critique taken-for-granted aspects of social life and structures with an aim toward the transformation of society (Tyson, 2023). In this regard, queer gerontology most closely follows in the tradition of critical and emancipatory gerontology (Estes & DiCarlo, 2019) which seek to critique social, economic, and political norms and structures that reify systems of privilege and oppression that in turn shape life tra- jectories, perpetuate inequities, and uphold an unjust political economy of aging (Estes, 2001). A critical approach applied in gerontology is also meant to liberate people from the para- digmatic images of old age and aging that portray nonnorma- tive experiences as problematic (King & Hall, 2023; Sandberg & Marshall, 2017). Developing and applying critical perspectives in queer gerontology may take many forms, from in-depth examina- tions of identity and behavior to legal and policy analysis. What these have in common is the analytical commitment to designing studies and making sense of data with respect to social structure and power. Examples of critical concepts and theories that are being used but could be taken up by more queer gerontologists are critical race theory, as demon- strated by Seelman et al. (2017), who applied Black feminist theory to develop tailored interventions supporting healthy aging among older Black lesbians. Further, critical disability theories (Baril & Silverman, 2022) and decolonial theory and Indigenous frameworks (Grande, 2017) offer a more com- prehensive understanding of the diverse experiences within the heterogenous LGBTQ+ community. The overarching goal of situating queer gerontology in relation to other critical concepts, perspectives, approaches, and practice is to sup- port scholars in avoiding the reproduction of oppressive and constraining norms while fostering new visions and realities for people as they age. This means attending to both agency and social structure in our scholarship and producing knowl- edge that speaks to the role of environmental context in aging. Principle Three: Engaging Reflexivity as a Form of Rigor We view critical reflexivity as both a core value and contin- ually evolving commitment for queer gerontologists. This approach goes beyond simple forms of self-awareness, striv- ing to understand how we are simultaneously products of and producers of social structure (Kondrat, 1999; Fabbre, 2016). More specifically, although scholars may articulate their con- scious feelings, thoughts, and motivations for their work, queer ge
