- EFL University student perceptions and experiences of learning to speak through a drama as a pedagogical tool: opportunities and challenges (2026) · Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education · doi
Future research could adopt mixed-methods approaches, combining interviews, classroom observations, video recordings, and discourse analysis to capture how affective, structural, and pedagogical factors intersect in drama-based speaking tasks. Longitudinal studies tracking students across semesters could reveal how affective barriers evolve and how sustained drama pedagogy impacts communicative competence. Expanding research across diverse institutions and cultural contexts would enhance transferability, while incorporating teacher and educator perspectives could illuminate co-constructed classroom norms and assessment practices. With digital technology increasingly central to language learning, studies could explore online or hybrid drama activities such as virtual role-plays, digital storytelling, and video-based self-assessment. Additionally, investigating emotional and relational dynamics: peer feedback, psychological safety, and identity negotiation through socio-cognitive or sociocultural lenses can deepen understanding of learners’ communicative agency and resilience, ultimately informing more context-sensitive, theory-driven innovations in EFL drama pedagogy.

Recommendations for Researchers The findings of this systematic review indicate that increasing methodological diversity in creative drama- and music-based social skill studies may be beneficial. In particular, the use of experimental and long-term research designs is considered to contribute to a more detailed examination of the effects of these approaches on social skill development. In addition, it is considered that increasing the number of doctoral level studies may deepen the theoretical framework of the field and enable more comprehensive analyses. In future studies, including integrated research designs in which creative drama and music methods are addressed together is considered to contribute to a clearer presentation of the common and distinct aspects of these two arts-based approaches regarding social skill 90 development. Furthermore, increasing the number of involving different age groups such as studies adolescents, university is considered to allow a more comprehensive evaluation students, and adults of the role of arts-based implementations in the lifelong learning process.

Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are proposed: 1. Kindergarten teachers may utilize the developed play-based learning materials in daily listening comprehension, vocabulary learners’ classroom development, oral language expression, and phonological awareness through meaningful and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. to enhance instruction 2. School administrators may support the use of play-based instructional materials by providing learning resources, instructional support, and professional development activities related to play-based learning and early language instruction. 3. Curriculum planners and education supervisors may encourage the development, validation, and utilization of contextualized and curriculum-aligned play-based learning materials consistent with the Kindergarten Curriculum Guide and K–10 MATATAG Curriculum. 4. Instructional material developers may design additional play-based learning resources targeting other developmental domains to support holistic learning among kindergarten learners. 5. Future researchers may conduct similar studies using larger groups of learners, longer intervention periods, or experimental research designs to further establish the effectiveness of play-based learning materials in early childhood education.

Based on the findings of this study, several recommendations are proposed for both practice and future research. Given the strong effects of creative drama on early literacy skills, particularly phonological and print awareness, these activities should be systematically and deliberately integrated into early childhood education curricula. Given its substantial impact on social skills—especially emotional regulation, verbal expression, and peer interaction— creative drama activities should be more widely incorporated into preschool instructional practices, and, in this regard, in-service training programs aimed at enhancing teachers’ knowledge and competencies in creative drama should be expanded. Due to its limited effects on pre-writing skills and higher-order abilities such as goal setting, creative drama should be implemented in conjunction with complementary instructional approaches. Furthermore, given the “equalizer effect” identified in the findings, creative drama interventions should be prioritized for children with lower initial performance levels, disadvantaged backgrounds, or developmental risks, as this approach may help reduce early learning disparities. Finally, future research should examine the long-term effects of creative drama interventions through longitudinal designs, involve larger, more diverse samples, and investigate their effectiveness relative to other instructional approaches.
