The compound handicap brought on by mental retardation creates many problems in the school community. The divergence of chronology and the levels of development of the individual compared to their nonhandicapped peers complicates the job of the physical educator. Individuals with mental retardation have limited intellectual capacities and require activities with few rules and little memorization.

Research on the academic achievement of integrated EMR pupils has yielded inconsistent results. The lack of comparability among treatment methods and criterion measures is re- flected in contradictory results. , 1972); however, contradictory findings were reported in a third study (Guerin & Szatlocky, 1974). Given the current thrust of federal and state laws mandating placement of retarded children in least restric- tive environments, further research on factors that inthence attitudes of school personnel toward mainstreaming appears imperative.
