This study provides further evidence that incorporating under-investigated typology provides further support for the universality of Universal Grammar (UG) by revealing how specific I-language operations reflect deeper, invariant principles of human language architecture.
The syntax of wh-agreement in Yemeni Ibbi Arabic · 2026Corpus studies of non-inherent adjectives with adverbial meaning are scarce, and the evidence provided is limited to particular sets of adjectives (Ghesquière and Davidse 2011.
Volume 3 Issue 2, June 2026 1. Initiate detailed linguistic research focused specifically on negation in the Nsukwa dialect. This research should aim to document how negation interacts with various grammatical elements such as verb forms, tense, and aspect, and its impact on sentence structure. 2. Expand comparative studies within the Igbo language family by including detailed analyses of negation in Nsukwa. This will enhance understanding of regional variations and contribute to a more comprehensive view of Igbo linguistic structures. 3. Implement projects dedicated to preserving and documenting the Nsukwa dialect, focusing on its grammatical features, including negation. Collaborate with local communities and linguistic experts to ensure that the documentation process is thorough and culturally sensitive. 4. Create and distribute educational materials and curricula that encompass all aspects of Nsukwa grammar, including negation. These resources should support language learners and educators in both formal and informal settings. 5. Encourage interdisciplinary research that explores the relationship between negation and cultural, social, and cognitive aspects of the Nsukwa-speaking community. This will provide a deeper understanding of how linguistic features reflect and influence broader cultural practices.
The present article is both a contribution to the broader study of the func- tioning of irrealis (subjunctive) moods in complementation, and an incen- tive to further work on the dubitative irrealis in Old Polish, Old Czech and West Slavonic in general. The questions to be answered include: when and how this irrealis went out of use in Middle Polish; what could have caused its demise; and what kind of relationship opposed dubitative irrealis com- plementation to the competing strategy with dubitative complementisers like jakoby.
The example also shows that individual aspectual checking is insufficient in the presence of multiple adverbials: polarity, achievement‑type readings, and RT–ET ordering jointly determine whether a past simple adverbial can be reinterpreted as past perfect or whether the derivation crashes.
In conclusion, this paper maps an underexplored area of the complementation of would rather and provides converging evidence for treating the revival of the pres- OPENACCESS ELA KREJČOVá 65 ent subjunctive as a grammatical phenomenon governed by predictable patterns attested with other triggers.
Finite complements of would rather: corpus-based evidence for the rise of the present subjunctive in American English · 2026 · DOIIn order to explain the variation, I put forward a hypothesis about the learning process, in which there is sometimes insufficient evidence in the input to determine whether değil and yok are negative, and learners choose between two conflicting heuristics that result in the negativity or non-negativity of these markers.
, 2009) to long-distance anaphora, by analyzing the role of locality and logophoricity on the behavior of ziji in the long-bei passive, an understudied construction in the domain of Chinese anaphora.
Local, Intermediate and Long-distance Binding: The Case of the Chinese Reflexive Ziji in the Long Bei-construction · 2024 · DOIHence, even if the equivalent lexical item does not exist in Japanese, a grammatical constraint such as “no agreement” is transferred to the initial state of the second language (Full Transfer in Schwartz and Sprouse, 1996).
Acquisition of L2 English Negative Quantifiers without Equivalent Lexical Items in an L1 · 2024 · DOIBecause Japanese is considered to be a “no agreement” language (Kuroda, 1992; Fukui & Sakai, 2003), QR is failed since the English negative quantifier cannot satisfy “agreement” for the feature-checking.
Acquisition of L2 English Negative Quantifiers without Equivalent Lexical Items in an L1 · 2024 · DOI(2014), the aim of this study is investigating a number of selected verbal prefixes and the active participle gāʕid ‘sitting’ as a progressive aspect marker in Qatari Arabic, a relatively under researched variety in the field of Arabic Dialectology.
A Corpus-Based Analysis of Verbal Prefixes and the Progressive Aspect Marker gāʕid ‘sitting’ in Qatari Arabic · 2024 · DOIThe English existential quantifier is of particular theoretical interest, since its subtle grammatical constraints are often unobservable and thus may induce learnability difficulties, especially if parallel constructions in the L1 are scarce or entirely absent.
Previous studies on the processing of ambiguous pronominal reference have led to contradictory results: some suggested that ambiguity may hinder processing (Stewart, Holler, & Kidd, 2007), while others showed an ambiguity advantage (Grant, Sloggett, & Dillon, 2020) similar to what has been reported for structural ambiguities.
We present arguments that patterns of RC sub-extraction discovered in Mainland Scandinavian languages are mirrored in English, and we highlight methodological innovations that we believe may be useful for further investigation into this and other topics.
Extraction from English RCs and Cross-Linguistic Similarities in the Environments That Facilitate Extraction · 2022 · DOIThe MS extraction patterns remain a topic of debate, but there is no consensus as to why extraction from RCs should be so degraded in English (compared to MS)—or why it should be so acceptable in MS (compared to English).
Extraction from English RCs and Cross-Linguistic Similarities in the Environments That Facilitate Extraction · 2022 · DOIL2 learning studies provide conflicting results with respect to whether native speakers of a null-subject language can fully eliminate ungrammatical postverbal subjects from their L2 English.
Are postverbal subjects difficult to eliminate from the L2 English of L1 speakers of Romanian? · 2022 · DOIWhile the indefinite NP in the two clause types has been studied in detail, little is known about how the other two roles – of ‘describee’ and ‘value’ – are typically realised.
Referential accessibility as an index of the discourse functions of predicative and specificational clauses · 2022 · DOIWith 1074 usages showing such interchangeable usages extracted from academic and media text types in written Nigerian English, it is shown that, at least in the variety under examination, the choice of since over because as a rationality expresser is scarce, and that overall pattern can be predicted on the basis of certain contexts including clausal weight and ordering pattern.
It suggests some possible paths of further investigations, among others: thus, negation needs a multi-levels of analysis, including an enunciative component; syntax requires an adequate description of informative value of items, and the internal composition of determiners in French remains an open question.
However, under the view of cognitive construction grammar, NPC remains a mystery with its form not clearly defined and its function not particularly discussed.
The Chinese Notional Passive Construction under the View of Cognitive Construction Grammar · 2018 · DOIArnon 2010); however, the findings of this study allow us to claim that the structure of relative clauses is complex and multilayered, encompassing not only morphological but also semantic and pragmatic factors, which should be investigated more thoroughly in the future.
This points toward a certain degree of microparametric variation in Spanish syntax (an understudied area), which will be tested by means of a grammaticality judgement task run among both SPS and SS speakers.
When focus goes wild: An empirical study of two syntactic positions for information focus · 2015 · DOIUniversal semantic linguistic categories such as the time, the modality, the definiteness / the indefiniteness and the semantic case – which are essential for the language description, but have not yet been examined and have not been sufficiently described in the academic grammars of the Polish and Bulgarian languages – have been selected.
Whereas it has been generally acknowledged that Chinese strictly obeys the Isomorphism Principle(Aoun and Li1989;Huang 1982),it remains to be known how Chinese comprehenders process in real time scope sentences with preceding discourse contexts.
Processing scope relations in Chinese:An online study on universal quantifiers and negation · 2015Some problems associated with current studies are discussed,namely,(1) research of SVCs in Sino-Tibetan languages remains descriptive rather than deductive;(2) there lacks a unified definition of SVCs across languages;(3) the relationship between surface SVC orders and the syntactic constructions remains unclear;(4) SVC constructions need to be considered from the perspective of syntatx-pragmatics interface;(5) the route of verb grammaticalization in SVCs remains insufficient.
