What the literature leaves open
A more comprehensive safety pro- file remains to be established. The first limitation of this study is its non-randomized design, which was a methodological necessity to evaluate the scale’s clinical utility. Future randomized controlled studies are warranted to validate the superiority of IOE over NGT, independent of the selec- tion criteria. Future randomized controlled trials with larger samples and pre-planned adjusted analy- ses are warranted.
Comparison of nasogastric tube and intermittent oro-esophageal tube feeding in patients with dysphagia and evaluation of an assessment scale for initial nutritional support selection · 2026 · DOIAcross the 26 studies reporting clinical outcomes, gains were con- centrated under direct or frequent clinician supervision, in institutional settings, and over short follow-up periods; evidence from unsupervised, community-based, or long-term contexts remains sparse.
Human–AI collaboration for dysphagia rehabilitation from effectiveness to implementation complexity: a systematic review · 2026 · DOIARTICLE IN PRESS ARTICLE IN PRESS ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT These findings align with prior studies, although substantial geographical variation was noted, the reasons for which remain incompletely understood.
Funding identify COPD as a clinically The present findings support systematic dysphagia screening following acute respiratory hospitalization, particularly in patients with recent respiratory infections or neuromuscular disease, important group with and a substantial and often underrecognized aspiration burden.
Swallowing impairment and aspiration risk in clinically stabilized patients hospitalized for acute respiratory events: a cohort-wide machine-learning analysis with COPD-specific insights · 2026 · DOITogether, these findings indicate that dysphagia-related aspiration remains underrecognized in routine pneumological practice, as objective airway invasion was frequently identified in the absence of overt swallowing complaints (24–26).
Swallowing impairment and aspiration risk in clinically stabilized patients hospitalized for acute respiratory events: a cohort-wide machine-learning analysis with COPD-specific insights · 2026 · DOIWhile nicergoline is known to increase substance P, the role of its major metabolite, 10-methoxy-dihydro-lysergol (MDL), in this therapeutic effect remains unclear.
Change in Swallowing Function and Substance P Levels Associated with Nicergoline in Neurological Disease: A Pilot Study · 2026 · DOIReasons cited include the complex nature of shared decision-making, the lack of consensus for defining EDAR and working within a medically-lead hierarchy, where doctors have the ultimate duty of care.
Application of practice guideline in supporting dysphagic patients who choose to Eat and Drink with Acknowledged Risk: speech-language pathology perspectives · 2025 · DOIQuantifying this swallow event using swallow reaction time (SRT) may further inform swallow assessment, but few studies have established normative reference values for SRT using a large sample size and well-tested, standardized, and validated videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) approach.
Purpose Evaluation and treatment of pediatric dysphagia, swallowing difficulties occurring during childhood, is in the speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) scope of practice; however, little is known regarding the education SLPs receive during their graduate work and afterwards to effectively assess, treat, and manage this diagnosis.
Pediatric Dysphagia: Survey Results Describing Speech-Language Pathologists' Education and Experience · 2020 · DOI28 SectionsAboutFull TextPDF ToolsAdd to favoritesDownload CitationTrack Citations ShareFacebookTwitterLinked In Abstract Purpose There is limited information regarding the theoretical underpinnings of an Ice Chip Protocol.
Future work will investigate the impact of RST on the degree and durability of clinical outcomes, including oral intake and quality of life, while also examining the potential added benefits of a home practice program that uses a commercially available and easy to use recording and analysis hardware and software.
Optimizing Respiratory-Swallowing Coordination in Patients With Oropharyngeal Head and Neck Cancer · 2017 · DOI6 Few studies have reported the prevalence of dysphagia in the independently living elderly population,7-9 and these studies have used a variety of nonvalidated instruments based on self-reported dysphagic symptoms, thus not reporting the real prevalence of dysphagia because the sensitivity and specificity of the tests were not taken into account.
PREVALENCE OF OROPHARYNGEAL DYSPHAGIA AND IMPAIRED SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF SWALLOW IN INDEPENDENTLY LIVING OLDER PERSONS · 2011 · DOIIt is recommended that this study should be replicated with a control group and a larger sample using either FEES or video fluoroscopy for scientific data to further substantiate music therapy outcomes in stroke rehabilitation.
Music Therapy Protocol Development to Enhance Swallowing Training for Stroke Patients with Dysphagia · 2010 · DOIBACKGROUND: A lack of data on dysarthria and dysphagia outcomes for children following traumatic brain injury (TBI) limits our clinical evidence base, and poses daily challenges for the speech language pathologist (SLP) managing this group.
Incidence and clinical presentation of dysarthria and dysphagia in the acute setting following paediatric traumatic brain injury · 2009 · DOIsummary This review emphasizes the following points: 1 The values of the physiological parameters of mastication (number of cycles and total electromyographic activity in the sequence, sequence duration, cycle frequency in the sequence, kinetic characteristics of the cycles) are characteristic of each individual and vary widely from one individual to another.
Applying pulse oximetry simultaneously to SSA can possibly add to the accuracy of aspiration detection, especially silent aspiration (limited evidence).
Future studies are needed to provide elaborate and comparable evaluation protocols and reporting of FEES in individuals with TBI.
Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review · 2026 · DOIAnecdotally, people living with motor neurone disease (plwMND) have frequent complications, although the frequency compared to other conditions remains unknown.
Incidence of unplanned gastrostomy tube replacements and associated complications in people with motor neurone disease and other conditions: A retrospective audit of an Australian dietitian‐led clinic · 2026 · DOIAlthough individual risk factors have been widely studied, the integrated clinical relationships among medical history, swallowing impairment profiles, and feeding management strategies across dysphagia subtypes remain insufficiently characterised.
Future research should focus on implementation strategies and outcome evaluation to ensure oral care becomes a standardised, patient- centred ele- ment of stroke care pathways.
Improving Oral Care in Stroke Patients: Patients' and Carers' Experiences of Oral Care in a Hospital Environment Following Acute Stroke · 2026 · DOILittle is known about the biomechanics of dysphagia in COVID-19, a pivotal aspect for guiding rehabilitation.
Defining the physiological profile of dysphagia in the COVID-19 patient using Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) · 2025 · DOIBACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Swallow strength and skill training with surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback may improve dysphagia but little is known about the feasibility and efficacy of this intervention in acute stroke.
Randomized controlled feasibility trial of swallow strength and skill training with surface electromyographic biofeedback in acute stroke patients with dysphagia · 2023 · DOIBACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although many studies have examined the efficacy of neck and trunk positioning during eating, few studies have examined how the positioning of the lower extremities affects swallowing function.
It will outline the limited literature bearing on age-related declines in jaw sensorimotor functions and control including reduced biting forces and increased risk of impaired chewing, speaking and swallowing.
Further studies that focus on decision making about children with learning disabilities who find feeding difficult are warranted as parents feel loss and disempowerment when decisions are made about non-oral feeding.
