The propositions here made are relevant to theoretical and applied areas of biology. Theoretically, there are dynamics at play in the phenomenon of pink salmon Umwelt degeneracy which could prove relevant to the (relatively young) area of invasion biology, as well as evolutionary systems dynamics and processual Umwelt studies. The hypothesis should also be further verified with intentional research; some strong initial starting places are proposed. The development of an Umwelt degeneracy model, proposed below, would bridge Umwelt research and scientifically informed ecosystem management practice. Develop Integrated Mathematical Umwelt-degeneracy Model The clearest point of departure for future research is the development of an integrated Umwelt-Degeneracy model. Neglecting, for the time being, the particularities of this Umwelt transition as above detailed, the argument may be boiled down to: 1. Fitness is primarily constrained by population density, 2. Population distribution is constrained by the homing process (and therefore the Umwelt), and thus. 3. Accurate homing should devolve in time. As such, the dispersion of the Umwelt-degenerate salmon population could be modelled as a complex reaction-diffusion equation, the basic assumption of which is fitness’ primary relation to population density. This basic model should then be elaborated with intergenerational heritability of homing degeneracy and later tuned with more complex understanding of negative homing agencies and their influence on population distribution. Some core mechanisms of the degeneracy model have been proposed here (such as the losses of population genetic diversity) but (as seen below) still must be researched more to have accurate mathematical coefficients. A synthesis of this such model and the thermal-regime models proposed by Dunmall et al. (2025) would be a generally good thing. The creation of this model would, from this author’s perspective, represent a significant development in Umwelt study and its relevance to the modern world. Whereas prior Umwelt transition models such as those of Mäekivi and Magnus, 2023 concern highly qualitative aspects of the Umwelt (represented accordingly), the Umwelt transition undergone by pink salmon regards the evolution of a spatial faculty (homing and thus dispersion) and consequently maps onto a quantifiable field. If its model proved an accurate predictor of this pink salmon population and a useful tool in management, it would also be socioeconomically relevant. Therefore, insofar as the modern world is one which privileges mathesis and is economically pragmatic, the legitimacy and value of agency/Umwelt-oriented research and modelling are each respectively given.
As the COI of the 658 bp fragment is considered a universal marker for species identification, for “DNA barcode” (Hebert et al., In this study, the hypothesis of population structuring was tested using AMOVA; however, the results do not support genetic structuring. This study provides a critical baseline for the maternal genetic structure of S. plagiostomus in the Tons River, where Kwanu shows higher mitochondrial haplotype diversity, which may contribute to maternal line diversity when combined with nuclear and phenotypic data. Consequently, it serves as a primary reservoir for sourcing diverse maternal lines for future conservation or aquaculture initiatives. However, as these results are useful for maintaining maternal line diversity, they should be viewed as a preliminary step. Future conservation programs must integrate this mitochondrial data with phenotypic evaluations and nuclear markers to resolve fine-scale genomic structure and long-term evolutionary potential of the S. plagiostomus in this region.
