What the literature leaves open
Owing to the nature of the technique, we did not account for neurons that could be part of the OMC IT population but project to regions outside the regions we sampled.
Genome-wide SNP data from population splits and divergence were analyzed using ASTRAL-III and StarBeast3 (Douglas et al. 2022), but the study does not evaluate how phylogenetic inference results vary under different multispecies coalescent parameterizations or sensitivity to clock model assumptions. Comparative analysis across relaxed clock models and alternative species tree topologies with quantified uncertainty intervals is needed to robustly date speciation events.
The paper integrates species distribution modeling (biomod2) with climate data (Turner et al. 2005, 2017) to project Gentoo Penguin range shifts, but does not incorporate fine-scale oceanographic variables (sea surface temperature, ice concentration, prey availability) specific to foraging habitats during breeding versus non-breeding seasons. Dynamic species distribution models coupling breeding and non-breeding niche requirements with decadal-resolution oceanographic datasets are required to improve predictive accuracy.
While Herman et al. (2024) and Herman & Lynch (2022) model stepping-stone dispersal and age-structured colony establishment in Gentoo Penguins, the study does not quantify how low-coverage genomic sequencing (acknowledged in Kardos & Waples 2024) affects the precision of admixture estimates derived from Dsuite D-statistics. Re-analysis using high-coverage whole-genome sequences for a subset of founders versus colonizers is needed to validate whether admixture signals robust to sequencing depth variation.
The study identifies vocal variation in Gentoo Penguins across regional geographic scales (Lynch & Lynch 2017, Rößler et al. 2022), but does not experimentally isolate whether these vocalizations function as reproductive isolation mechanisms between diverging populations. Direct playback experiments testing mate recognition and acceptance across vocal variants in sympatric and allopatric Gentoo Penguin populations are needed to establish whether vocal divergence constitutes a functional barrier to gene flow.
Ambient temperature data is only available for 19% of all files, though approximate values can be gathered from historical weather data using time, date and location of observations.
Specifically, how to best operationalize social and communicative complexity remains debated; alternative hypotheses, such as the role of a species’ ecology, morphology, or phylogenetic history, have been neglected; and the actual ways in which variation in signaling is directly affected by social factors remain largely unexplored.
