What the literature leaves open

  • Supplier risks such as bankruptcy, ineffective collaboration between buyers and suppliers, and inability to deliver on time are found to have a high impact on disruption events. Enhancing supplier assessment, developing diversified sourcing strategies, and developing the supplier’s capabilities are necessary steps in addressing risks and improving the robustness of the supply chain (Chauhan and Vimala Rani, 2025). Figure 23 depicts an effective framework for mitigating risks in outsourced assembly systems. Identification of the risks is followed by their ranking, then prioritizing risks associated with severe delay, management, and supplier risks. The final steps include developing and implementing appropriate mitigation policies with monitoring and policy revision activities to form a feedback process. Adopting Industry 4.0 technologies such as IoT, AI, and big data analytics creates operational and cybersecurity risks, especially when an organization lacks sufficient digital infrastructure. Therefore, managers have to ensure system compatibility, check technology readiness, and implement robust cybersecurity and data protection mechanisms that can facilitate reliable digital integration (Sharma et al., 2025; Kusi-Sarpong et al., 2021). Additive manufacturing as an in-house production option is gaining traction as a strategy for increasing resilience by reducing dependence on upstream suppliers and better safeguarding the company’s intellectual property. Economic instability continues to be the most influential drivers of demand-side risks associated with the automotive sector in India, and thus it is necessary to adopt flexible production plans and engage in scenario analyses and proactive inventory management to deal with demand-side risks (Kumar et al., 2020). The absence of sufficient institutional frameworks and weak regulatory systems adds to the risks in the area of supply chains; therefore, there is a need for strengthened governance, compliance monitoring, and supplier development. As a counterpart to digitalization of supply chains, it is also important to develop updated regulations to prevent cyber risks associated with the offshore outsourcing of work.

  • There are multiple limitations of this study that should be stated honestly. The 54 respondents provided an adequate sampling method to use with analytical techniques; however, this limits how widely the findings can be generalized outside the Chennai logistics community that supplied the data. JNPT Mumbai and ICD Tughlakabad as major hub environments may have significantly different dynamics of service quality because the physical and operational infrastructures in those locations are dissimilar, there are different products through trade in those locations, and the customs procedures for processing are also dissimilar among these hub locations. The study only used a cross-sectional design to capture perceptions at a single moment in time. Therefore, it cannot speak to how service quality changes over months and years impact satisfaction. Furthermore, the sub-scale reliability values of a = 0.2781 for Shipment Coordination and a = 0.2084 for Customer Satisfaction, while lower than the ideal reliability level of 0.70, indicate a need for a complete overhaul of these sections of the questionnaire before the results for those sub-scales can be reported with accurate confidence. © 2026 The Author(s). Additionally, due to this study's limitations, pricing transparency, claims settlement efficiency, and brand trust would be excellent candidates to include in a more comprehensive measure of service quality.
