What the literature leaves open

  • This study set out to examine how the circular economy (CE) has been incorporated into the scientific domain of agrifood research, development, and innovation (RD&I) to interrogate the conceptual structure, thematic evolution, and dominant orientations that have shaped this interface. The evidence generated demonstrates that, although CE has become an increasingly visible reference in agrifood RD&I, its integration into agrifood RD&I remains fragmented, and frequently anchored in process-specific or efficiency-oriented approaches rather than in systemic reconfigurations of innovation agendas. From a theoretical standpoint, the main contribution of the study lies in reframing the CE–agrifood relationship through the lens of RD&I as a knowledge-producing and direction-setting domain. The results suggest that the recovered literature has not converged toward a unified conceptual model capable of consistently articulating circularity principles with technological innovation trajectories. Instead, what emerges is a pattern of partial convergence, in which CE appears simultaneously as (1) a normative framework (2), a set of technological solutions (often centered on waste valorization and resource efficiency) and (3) an analytical layer supported by system-level assessment tools. However, these dimensions remain only loosely integrated, indicating that circularity has been more frequently operationalized as incremental improvement within prevailing production logics. Saying in other form: circularity has not been operationalized as a driver of transformative innovation. This finding advances the scientific literature by clarifying that the central challenge is not the absence of CE-related research, but the limited consolidation of CE as a structuring principle of agrifood RD&I itself. 1 3Circular Economy and Sustainability (2026) 6:352 352 Page 28 of 35 One of the main findings of this study is the disconnect between the strategic prominence attributed to digital agriculture-related technologies and their actual position within the scientific structure of circular economy-oriented agrifood RD&I. Although artificial intelligence, blockchain, and Agriculture 4.0/5.0 are frequently presented as drivers of future circular transitions, the current literature remains predominantly organized around resource recovery, biomass valorization, waste management, and life cycle assessment. This suggests that digital technologies presently represent an emerging expectation for the field rather than one of its consolidated research frontiers. Practically, these results carry direct implications for the design and governance of agrifood RD&I systems.

  • This study suggests some tangible recommendations that can help and improve the implementation of circular economy practices in the industrial sector of Bangladesh. By filling the existing gap between theory and practice, the proposed recommendations indicate certain steps to be taken by relevant parties. Because the scraping method prevented keyword repetition within a factor occurrence, the keyword frequencies represent single occurrences within distinct projects rather than counting keyword repetition. While references to collaboration and cooperation are expected in CE projects, collaboration appears to require more than relational coordination alone. The prominence of transparency and traceability indicates a focus on shared information infrastructures as foundations for trust and collective action. Figure 1. Extracted text segments and illustrative examples From the 279 analysed cases, a total of 720 text segments were identified that referenced one or more of the nine enabling factors. Each segment captured a project context in which a relevant keyword appeared, revealing a range of actions, approaches, and strategies associated with collaboration in CE projects.   • This study has several limitations that should be considered when interpreting the findings. First, regarding expert-based subjectivity, while our panel included diverse stakehold- ers and the sensitivity analysis confirmed ranking stability (Section 4.1.3), the judgments remain inherently subjective and reflect the specific knowledge and biases of the five experts. Second, regarding scope constraints, our empiri- cal focus is exclusively Indonesia. As revised throughout the manuscript, we frame our findings as contextualized to Indonesia with implications for other emerging econo- mies rather than claiming universal generalizability. Third, regarding method selection, Fuzzy RAFSI, ISM, and MIC- MAC rely on the quality of the Structural Self-Interaction Matrix derived from expert consensus; alternative methods (e.g., DEMATEL, Fuzzy AHP) might yield complementary insights. Fourth, this study identifies and structures enablers but does not measure their causal effects quantitatively; future research could employ structural equation model- ing or system dynamics to test the directional relationships proposed in the ISM hierarchy. Despite these limitations, the integrated framework provides a rigorous foundation for understanding circular resilience in informal-dominated e-waste systems. Finally, comparative studies between circular economy initiatives in different African regions could highlight best practices and lessons to be learned for successful implementation on a continental scale (Koech et al., 2023).
