ESTIMATION OF EFFECTIVE DOSE FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY SCANS FROM SELECTED DIAGNOSTIC CENTERS IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA · 2026 · DOIRecommendations are made based on the findings of the study. First, urgent protocol review at Hospital B is imperative, as the abdomen-pelvis doses were found to be 151 % higher than those at Hospital A (t = -21.3, p < 0.001), representing a systematic and unacceptable radiation protection deficit that demands immediate investigation through a comprehensive audit of technical parameters (mA, kV, scan length, and pitch) and dose modulation automated consideration implementation. Second, dose optimization for chest CT at both Hospitals is necessary, as both institutions exceed the British Columbia benchmark. Hospital B requires more urgent intervention, given its mean dose of 15.4 mSv; regular statistical comparisons using t-tests should be incorporated into routine quality assurance programs to monitor inter-hospital variation. Third, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and relevant professional bodies should prioritize developing National Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) by using this study's pooled data to inform a preliminary national survey. Fourth, mandatory continuing education in radiation protection and dose optimization techniques should be instituted for all radiologists and radiographers who operate CT equipment. Finally, a larger, multicenter nationwide survey is urgently needed to establish robust national DRLs and monitor trends over time, as the highly significant negative t-value for abdomenpelvis (-21.3) provides compelling quantitative evidence that cannot be attributed to chance (p < 0.001) and underscores the critical need for systematic dose optimization programs across Nigeria.
